Things to Do in Maidstone

A local's guide to seven activities, days out and date nights worth your weekend — for adults, couples, families and visitors. Rated 4.9 stars from over 1,110 Google reviews at the top of the list, but the rest of the town's got plenty too.

Maidstone is the county town of Kent — a market-town centre with a riverside, castle country on its doorstep, and enough variety to fill a day, a date night, or a long weekend. Here are seven things to do in Maidstone we'd actually recommend, whether you're local, visiting from London, or working your way around the county.

1. Rage Out — Rage Rooms & Axe Throwing

Right, full disclosure: this is us. But Rage Out is genuinely the most-reviewed activity in town — 4.9 stars from over 1,110 Google reviews, and we've been featured on ITV, BBC and Sky. Three private Rage Rooms (smash plates, glass and electronics with sledgehammers, crowbars, frying pans and scaffold tubes), plus dedicated Axe Throwing lanes with live ThrowDown Pro scoring.

Sessions start from £40 per Rage Room (BYO) or £14 per person for Axe Throwing. Open Thursday to Sunday at 89 Bank Street, central Maidstone — 5 minutes from both Maidstone East and Maidstone West stations.

2. Leeds Castle

About 15 minutes south of Maidstone in 500 acres of parkland — one of the most-visited castles in England. Moat, gardens, hedge maze, falconry displays, a maze of an estate, and yes, the dog collar museum. A solid full-day option, especially for families. Tickets vary by season; check the official site before travelling.

  • Best for: family days out, history, garden walks, photography

3. Mote Park

450 acres of free public parkland right in Maidstone itself. A boating lake, woodland walks, the Mote Park parkrun on Saturdays, an outdoor adventure zone, and a children's play area. The visitor centre has a café and bike hire. Effectively the town's outdoor common-room.

  • Best for: mornings out, parkrun, dog walks, picnics, free things to do

4. Kent Life

An open-air heritage attraction just north of Maidstone, with restored historic buildings, traditional craft displays and farm animals. Popular with families and school groups, quieter than Leeds Castle, and a half-day-in-itself sort of place.

  • Best for: families, history-curious visitors, half-day outings

5. Kent Owl Academy

Birds-of-prey experiences in the Maidstone area — owl handling, hawk-walks, falconry sessions. The kind of activity people travel for from across the South East. Sessions need booking ahead and are pitched at all ages, depending on the package.

  • Best for: unusual gifts, animal lovers, milestone birthdays, adventurous date nights

6. The Maidstone Distillery

A local craft distillery making spirits in town. Tours and tastings are typically the format — call the distillery to confirm what's running on your visit. Pairs nicely with an evening at Rage Out if you're treating someone to something memorable.

  • Best for: date nights, gift experiences, slow afternoons

7. Popeyes Maidstone

The American fried-chicken chain has a Maidstone branch — and yes, the queue is part of the experience. If you're making an evening of it, line your stomach here before booking your Rage Out session, or stop in afterwards for a celebratory chicken sandwich.

  • Best for: quick lunches, post-activity refuels, fried-chicken devotees
